Roman Helmet
The “galea” dates from the 1st Century BC to the 2nd Century AD, specifically the “Imperial Gallic H” type influenced by Gallic craftsmen. Worn by Roman Legionaries during Julius Caesar’s invasion of Britain and at Hadrian’s Wall, its side-to-side horsehair crest indicates a Centurion’s rank. Centurions commanded centuries of 80 men or entire cohorts of 480 men.
